The reality is that every single person in a professional capacity today once had zero experience. If you look at CEOs, senior software engineers and marketing managers, they all started in the same position that you are currently in. They had the same feelings that you have; they most likely thought about how intimidating it would be to take the first step in their careers.
Your resume is the first thing an employer will see about you before they meet you for an interview. Your resume is essentially a marketing tool, created to show potential employers who you are, what Knowledge or skills you possess and why you should be given an opportunity by them. For freshers' resumes, it shouldn't matter how many years of experience you have; it should demonstrate how much potential, what kinds of skills you possess and how motivated you are to develop new skills.
You can still write a great resume without experience. You just need the right format and the right sections. This guide will tell you everything step by step.
What does a Resume format mean?
Resume format refers to how you set out your facts and figures on paper, aiding the recruiter in quickly identifying your details.
Here are three main formats available for Freshers;
1. Chronological format
You will list your experience by the date at which you have achieved it, making this format unsuitable for Freshers (as they will not have any experience).
2. Functional Format; (Skills-Based)
Functional uses both your skills and education as the highlight of your resume, therefore making this a great choice for a Fresher.
3. Combination format:
a mix of the two above (skills and some experience); use this format when completing either an internship or a college project.
What to Include in a Fresher's Resume?
1. Your Contact Details:
- Full name
- Phone number
- Professional email
- LinkedIn URL (if you want)
- City & State
2. Career Objective:
Write 2-3 lines about what you want, plus what you can contribute.
Example: "I'm looking for an entry-level job as a software developer, and am a BCA graduate who has good knowledge of both Python programming language and web development. I want to learn to become successful in a professional organisation."
3. Education:
Degree name, College/University Name, Year Graduated, and Your Percentage or CGPA (applies only if you obtained 60% or above).
4. Skills
Two types of skills should be included:
Hard skills: Examples of hard skills include Python, Java, MS Excel, Photoshop, SQL, etc.
Soft Skills: Examples of soft Skills include communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and time management
5. Projects
Include your college or personal projects:
(1). Project Name
(2). 1-2 lines about what you accomplished
(3). Tools or technology used in the project
(4). Link to your Git Hub repository if applicable
6. Internship / Work Experience (if applicable)
If you have had a part-time job, freelance work or internship – include it. Use action verbs to describe your contributions. Examples of action verbs are developed, managed, designed, assisted, etc.
7. Certification
List courses you have completed (online type courses/certificates) from:
- Coursera
- Udemy, etc.
8. Extracurricular Activities
Examples:
- College club participation
- Sports achievements
- Volunteerism
- Events you have organised
What Is ATS?
ATS, or Applicant Tracking System, is a type of software that employers utilise to conduct automated scanning of applicants' resumes. Your resume will not be considered for hiring if it is not ATS-friendly.

- Include resume keywords from the job description
